Coaching & Tutoring
As a writing coach, I mentor individuals to effectively communicate in their professional, academic, and personal writing. I not only teach strategies and methods that accomplish an individual’s writing goals, but I also develop their critical thinking skills: A perfect piece of writing is not my primary objective—the objective is to cultivate a better writer.
I help students and professionals cultivate a range of both higher-order and lower-order writing skills. These include refining content development; improving organizational structure; integrating research and information; constructing compelling arguments; engaging target audiences; conducting critical analyses; implementing transitions; creating clarity, concision, and precision; maintaining consistency; refining style; developing voice and tone; crafting fluid and articulate sentence structures; revising, editing, and proofreading; mastering grammar conventions; punctuating adeptly; and orchestrating nuanced language use, including diction, syntax, and semantics.
Frequently, I collaborate with students and professionals on academic writing, application essays, personal statements, speeches, resumes, cover letters, business communication, and personal writing projects.
I use a coaching style based on the Co-Active Coaching Model. In coaching sessions, the students/professionals and I work together to accomplish the following:
- Establish the individual’s goals.
- Address the individual’s questions and concerns.
- Provide feedback on the writing.
- Implement changes to the writing.
- Practice and discuss writing methods, strategies, conventions, and styles.
- Model and critically analyze good writing.
- Develop an action plan (with a project timeline and measurable goals).
- Prepare a summary and review the individual’s accomplishments in the session.
