Relationships and Meaning

Preface

My blog is primarily dedicated to the meta: writing about writing. Yet, in its original form, it was also a place for personal reflection. Today, I am sharing a post that reflects one of the most fundamental reasons I write:

Writing is not merely a method of communicating with others. It is a way of communicating with ourselves, making sense of the chaos and events that unfold within and around us. Writing down what happens in our lives and reflecting on it can create clarity, peace, and understanding.

Healing from Loss

People come and go in our lives. This is life.

But when we lose a partner, this loss is particularly difficult.

Relationships form the basis of meaning in our lives. Our identities are connected to them.

When we lose someone, through death or separation, we lose the relationship—and perhaps we feel that meaning is ripped from us, leaving a void.

However, we must heal. If we do not, we are living in the past. And if we are living in the past, we are stagnating. The past is a place of reference, not of residence.

Recently, having lost relationships with two of the most influential people in my life, I am reminded of the meaning that they shared with me, which is indeed present and everlasting:

  1. Let go of the past. Change is inevitable, so embrace it.
  2. God is our best friend, trust Him.
  3. It is when we forgive ourselves that we can move on.
  4. You are loved. And everything is gonna be okay.
